Video conferencing in Birmingham

This web pages have been created to support the use of video conferencing (VC) technology across Birmingham's schools.

You can find answers to many of the questions you may have on video conferencing, whether they are technical, conceptual or educational. We aim to support not only the technical deployment, but also the every-day use in the classroom of this exciting new development.

We encourage you to submit your questions to our experts and share your own experiences, good practice and projects with the whole teaching and learning community.

Video conferencing is now available to all schools in Birmingham. It is now possible to use Video for learning between schools in Birmingham, and also schools outside Birmingham via ISDN and IP. Schools in Birmingham are part of the worldwide education addressing scheme, this enables connectivity with all other devices worldwide that use the same addressing scheme. We have also provided facilities to connect to schools that do not use the standard E164 numbering scheme.

Schools can also use Virtual Conference rooms if they need to connect to more than 2 sites. A simple recording and video streaming facility is also provided.

Instructions for installing PVX desktop video conferencing software can be found here:

New Gatekeeper and MCU external addresses

Over Christmas 2006 we have migrated the external, public IP addresses for our video conferencing services to an entirely new IP range under the control of Service Birmingham.  Some additional changes will be made in the next few days to school routers to complete this process.

In order for schools to make VC calls using E164 numbers the gatekeeper registration address will need to be changed on all video conference endpoints to 80.249.56.3:1719. Endpoint e164 numbers and internal addresses will remain unaffected.

The gatekeeper address may either be changed locally by school staff or remotely by Link2ICT staff.  For remote updates you will need to connect your VC unit to the network and turn it on, before contacting the This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it .

Instructions for updating PVX desktop video conferencing software can be found on the PVX Update page.

External IP address of the conference unit (MCU) has also changed to 80.249.56.4. This will only impact external users of the system.
