Beans and Biodiversity
Beanstalk Bonanza!
This project supported many Early Years and Primary School settings by enabling the popular activity of growing plants from seed.  The purpose was to introduce children to the key concept of bio-diversity through seeing many varieties of beans grown alongside each other.

Georgiana's beans
The Year of the Environment contributed by supplying many varieties of bean seed, and over 17,600 seeds were distributed to Birmingham Schools.  Each 'package' of seeds contained 40 seeds made up of at least 4 seeds of at least 10 varieties - accompanied by some planting and care advice.  There was no charge for up to one package per class in a year group.
Some of the seeds were supplied from the Henry Doubleday Research Association's ‘Heritage Seed Collection’.

In return schools were asked to supply a photograph later in the year showing some of the pupils with their bean plants, and these will appear on this web site as they are submitted.  We are also planning to identify a suitable form of celebration, with celebrities, in acknowledgement of the success of this project.
