Local Election Result
Local Election Result

The results of Birmingham’s Local Election on 3rd May 2012 increased the Labour group councillors to 77. They now have an overall majority of 34 council seats. Labour will soon form the next administration will lead the council.

The referendum about a Mayor for Birmingham was also held on 3rd May. Birmingham rejected the choice of a directly elected mayor for Birmingham.

YES: 88,085 votes (42.2%)

NO: 120,611 votes (57.8%)

So we will continue to operate the leader and cabinet model.

What will change?

The Labour group has set out in their political priorities in their manifesto.

This may affect

  • How some council's services are organised
  • The powers of constituency committees, the services they deliver and the structure of directorates.
  • Change of the political structure, including the make-up of cabinet portfolios

The proposed amendments to the constitution will go to the Council AGM on 22nd May and will be posted on Birmingham City Council's website – look out for the link!
