This activity uses 'virtual money' that can be dragged and dropped on the screen in order to solve a series of money related problem solving questions. Each problem is presented as a written question and is accompanied by the sum laid out as a mathematical operation. As the coins (and notes) are dragged into the answer area, the amount changes to show how much is left over. Once a pupil feels they have removed the right amount of money, they can check their answer then move on to the next question. This approach works particularly well if used for large group or whole class teaching with a whiteboard and projector.
There are ten questions in all, getting progressively harder. Part way through the activity (at question 6) ,the children are presented with problems that don't exactly match the available coins. This is where the notion of changing coins for lesser denominations is introduced. |
