Resource Support Notes:
The site not only supports the teaching of the national Transition Unit Authors and Texts by offering a range of practical, interactive ideas for lessons, but also provides a collection of worksheets designed to scaffold pupils work as they write entries for their Reading Journals. In addition, the site offers a selection of generic worksheets that can be used to develop reader response whatever book or story pupils are studying.

The four main areas within the site are:

Year 6 Worksheets:
A collection of worksheets that pupils can use as they write entries for their Reading Journal. The resources support both the study of authorial craft e.g. characterisation or plot development, and the development of personal response to texts.

Year 7 Worksheets:
A collection of resources directly linked to each lesson in the national Transition Unit Authors and Texts. Contents include worksheets for use by pupils, note-making frames, OHT masters and a card sort activity.

Responding to texts:
A resource collection of materials designed to stimulate pupils to respond to and explore the books or stories they are reading. These materials could be used independently by pupils or as worksheet masters by the teacher. Some activities are designed to be completed on-line.

Topics include: researching the author, exploring character, considering the storyline, making a personal response, and keeping a reading log.

Teacher support materials:
This area contains three sections:
1. A series of case studies exemplifying how Authors and Texts has been differentiated within Birmingham schools.
2. Examples of writing completed by pupils while studying the unit.
3. Fostering Continuity and Progression - a selection of ideas for alternative lessons and for differentiation generated by Birmingham teachers during the Bridging the Gap conferences.
