Music lessons at school are under threat as the government cuts its budget for music services by a quarter, from £82.5m a year to £60m.

And, while local authority-led music services are being replaced to a degree by 'hubs', some are critical of the Arts Council's ability to assess bids. Last year's Henley review of music education recommended that local authority-run music services should be replaced by hubs (partnerships comprising schools, arts organisations, charities and other education providers) where music services bid for the right to continue their work - with no guarantee of success.
