Safe@Work is a secondary school student safety workshop that has been developed by Birmingham City Council’s Regulation and Enforcement Division.

Its aim is to increase the health and safety awareness of young people who are about to embark on work experience or enter into part time employment. The one hour classroom workshop includes discussion around practical case studies, a hazard spotting activity and a quiz. 
 
Since first piloted in 2009, the workshop has been delivered to more then 850 students. Following feedback from the students it has been revised and improved, the most recent addition being the hazard spotting activity. 

The workshops are presented by Health & Safety Inspectors from Birmingham City Council’s Environmental Health. It has also enabled officers to share with the students their knowledge and experiences of incidents to young people in the workplace. 
 
It also aims to:

•    raise awareness of employers and employees duties in the workplace
•    promote the principle of sensible risk management
•    de-mystify risk assessment in the “everything risky must be managed” culture.
