Resource Support Notes:
Government policy has allowed the people of London to vote for an elected Mayor (Ken Livingstone won the election). The issue of an elected mayor is now being talked about for Birmingham.

The 'newspaper' activity is intended to act as a stimulus for pupils to examine the current debate. The issues raised in the newspaper articles can be used to organise class debates relating to the pros and cons of an elected Mayor for Birmingham.

The newspaper also contains links to a variety of sites and resources ranging from profiles of local councillors and their wards to the Young People's Parliament where online debates are in process.

Like all newspapers, there are additional links to other areas of interest such as the BGfL Weather Station, the Quiz Creator and a 'Colour Supplement' (the Gallery).

Pupil Notes

The citizens of London voted for a new Mayor. Do you think that it would be a good idea for Birmingham to have an elected Mayor as well?

Take a look at the newspaper, read the articles and make up your own mind. You could discuss your views with your friends or even ask your teacher to hold a debate in the classroom.
