Visual Impairment Support

A database of resources for Visually Impaired Pupils is available on the BGfL. Supplied by the Unified Service for VI, this is a database of already adapted materials available for loan within Birmingham schools.  Updated on a weekly basis, the VI Resource Database can be downloaded here.

For advice, guidance and assistance with ICT and Visual Impairment, Inclusive Technology provides a useful set of links to a variety of support organisations.

The discussion area of the Advisory Centre for Education (ACE) contains a wide range of SEN topics in particular issues surrounding visual impairment.

The Visual Impairment Section (B. 7.5) of the Code of Practice, which includes case studies and commentary relating to nature and range of impairment, can be found within the DfEE site.

The Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) has published its Executive Summary, 'Shaping the Future' on the Internet which makes for interesting reading in such fields as: Education; Prejudice and bullying; Socialising and leisure; Getting out and about and Health and wellbeing.

The BECTa site provides guidance as well as technology updates relating to issues around visual impairment in the classroom. A series of reports into speech recognition projects from around the country can be downloaded from their projects page.
