Assembly Stories

The following pages contain a selection of stories suitable for reading during assembly. There are two themes; 'Heroes of the Faiths' and 'Assembly Stories'.

Heroes of the Faiths: draws on material from the major faiths from around the world and focuses on significant people and events. Each story is preceded by teacher notes and the text is presented in language that the children can understand.

Assembly Stories: is a selection of stories reflecting some of the main religious festivals from Christianity, Judaism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism. As these festival occur at different times of the year it is a useful resource for developing monthly religious themes.

These stories have been generously donated for display on the BGfL by Bill Dargue, an experienced primary teacher and Deputy Head at Heath Mount Primary School, Balsall Heath.

The complete sets of texts were originally published as:

Dargue, W. 'Heroes of the Faiths: Assembly Stories from Around the World', Oxford University Press (1985)

Dargue, W. 'Assembly Stories from Around the World', Oxford University Press (1983)

Digitisation and presentation of the texts for the BGfL was carried out by Paul Wiredu, a year 11 pupil from Handsworth Grammar School, as part of his work experience placement.

As a sign of recognition, it would be appreciated if acknowledgement of their original source and authorship be made when using these texts in the classroom.
