1 hr
Write '1/2' on board; 'What does it mean?' Collect egs & language used.

Repeat for other unit fractions & extend to eg; 2/3, 3/5
- Use fraction notation
- Recognise simple equivalent fractions
- Convert between fractions
- Use diagrams to compare 2 or more simple fractions

Discuss different pictures for 1/2;
eg: for 1/2, 2/4, 3/6 draw an identical rectangle for each one & shade 1 of 2, 2 out of 4 & 3 out of 6 equal parts.
From these, identify the equivalence of the 3 fractions
Activity Suggestions:

1) In Pairs: Use cards with halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, sixths & tenths families. Sort cards into equivalent groups. Compare & discuss results with another pair.

2) In Pairs: Equivalent Snap or Dominoes

3) WS N2/1 Fractions Wall for visual comparison of 2 fractions

4) All About Fractions ( see menu of objectives)
Teacher to say / write a fraction; pupils to record on small whiteboards an equivalent fraction.

Question explicitly for 'missing members' of an equivalent family.

L2

1 hr
Teacher to say / write a fraction; pupils to record on small whiteboards an equivalent fraction.
- Simplify fractions by cancelling all common factors & identify equivalent fractions
Choose a fraction eg: 15/40; CFs in both numbers?
Explain how to find common factors systematically. How do we know when we have found the simplest equivalent fraction? Shortcut: take out HCF
1) Written activity to find the simplest equivalent fraction by cancelling all common factors. (Ensure pupils record each step.)

2) Further activity using HCF shortcut.

3) All About Fractions ( see menu of objectives)
Repeat whiteboard activity, asking for simplest equivalent fraction.

WS N2/2 Fraction Snakes : snake with at least 10 nos: go up/ down snake or between any 2 numbers
- Begin to add & subtract simple fractions & those with common denominators
- Use diagrams to compare 2 or more simple fractions
Use diagrams to look at addition & subtraction of 2 fractions - with same / different denominators
1) Generate questions on + & - on fractions using 3 coloured dice. 1st gives denominator, 2nd gives numerator, 3rd gives + or -. Extend to 3 or more fractions.

2) All About Fractions see menu of objectives)
Review addition & subtraction method, eg: by asking 'why is
1/2 + 1/2 = 1/4
incorrect?'; Denominators don't change, - why not?
