Ratio and ProportionSparks 2. Using several measures, eg: in £, metres, kg, minutes
  • Refine methods of multiplication and division
  • Use ratio and proportion to solve problems
  • Plan and carry out calculations using a calculator
  • Judge whether an answer is reasonable and check results using inverse operations or other methods

  • Ratio, proportion and notation 3:2, in addition to:

    Numerator, denominator, mixed number, improper fraction, unit fraction, cancel, simplify, equivalent, convert, decimal fraction, recurring decimal, percentage.
    A problem requiring understanding of both ratio & proportion Eg:
    OHS N4/3: Shades of Grey
    For ratio - use Q on sheet or similar; For proportion, set Qs involving total quantities. Eg: 'They sell in tins of 240 ml. What proportion of Black & White is in each can? Gives answers as F (or D or %) ...
    EFFICIENT PROBLEM-SOLVING USING RATIO AND PROPORTION

    Provide range of problem-solving opportunities involving both ratio and proportion, to include where suitable:,br>
  • Proportional division at appropriate point
  • Review and refine written methods of X and ÷
  • Plan efficient use of calculator
  • Judging whether results are reasonable
  • Use of inverse operation etc to check results
  • Choose one example from each lesson to highlight at least 1 of these 5, eg: a proportional division problem;
    OR
    Whole class review of inverse operation using a number of examples (x10, +4 etc)
