INTRODUCTION TO ST. BERNARD'S R.C. SCHOOL

Few schools can have so interesting a neighbourhood to investigate, for there are evidences of all periods since the Saxon. These notes will provide no more than an introduction to the area, which would require a large volume to exhaust its possibilities.

If the school had been built a century and a half ago its full address would have included 'Wake Green Lane, Greet Commond, Swanshurst Quarter, Civil Parish of Yardley, Worcestershire'. The Common went first, after the final enclosure of 1843. The Quarter survived as an administrative division when Yardley became a Rural District in the 1890's, but neither Quarter nor District survived Yardley's absorption into Birmingham in 1911, when its county became Warwickshire.
