Following the Act for Commutation of tithes to an annual rent-charge,
finely- drawn large-scale maps were made of every parish, showing
all hedges, lanes, and buildings. Those for St. Bart's Edgbaston
and St. Martin's Birmingham may be fitted together fairly well to
show, at 12 inches to a mile, the still wholly rural character of
the western end of both parishes. The field-pattern had chan-ged
very little since Snape, there were no new farms, and only on the
turnpikes was there any new building. The ancient Park was divided
into about 150 closes, none of more than 10 acres and many much
less. There were small dwelling clusters at Good Knaves' End and
about The Oaks.
