The manors of Harborne and Smethwick were in Offlow Hundred of
south Staffordshire, along with Handsworth and Perry : Birmingham,
Aston, and Erdington were in the Hundred of Coleshill, which in
the C12th became Hemlingford, after the moot place at a Tame ford
near Kingsbury. Kings Norton and Northfield were ori-ginally in
Came, and Yardley was a detached part of Pershore Hundred : these
three Worcestershire manors were later part of Halfshire Hundred.
The small size of the Plateau's population a thousand years ago
is evidenced by the huge area covered by Coleshill and Offlow -
about six times the size of the present city which originally at
least, contained only two hundred families.
