Fire was a constant hazard in towns and villages of timber and thatch. London's Great Fire of 1666 followed two hot, dry summers. Vestries provided hooks on poles at street corners for the pulling down of blazing thatch. But the reference in the title is to the deliberate firing of Birmingham in war.
