Listed separately in Domesday Book, Witton was ultimately to be
absorbed into Erdington, perhaps after 1735. It was bought by the
lord of Pirie in 1350, and was held by the Ests. of Yardley for
nearly 2 centuries. Booths and Allestreys followed. After 1735 sale
there was never a resident lord. Witton was well supplied with meadows
along Tame and Witton Brooks, and had at least two open fields.
The much-altered plain Georgian hall is on Marsh Lane between Upper
and Lower Witton. There were mills and pools on the brook, Witton
Forge below Ashford Pool: the pools were enlarged in the C19th and
became reservoirs. There was a windmill on Bleak Hills. When the
common was enclosed in 1802 there were no open fields left.
