Sautlege (willows clearing farm) 1170. Manor house north of Adderley
Park. Bounds - Rea, Tame, Bromford and
Stechford Lanes, River Cole, Bordesley bound - of Saltley and Little
Bromwich (ref. 13C.) separated by Wash Brook. L.B. manor house,
moated, on Alum Rock Road - survives, much altered. Later hall,
Ward End Hall, north of park inside double moat, demolished 1950's,
first ref. 1675. But first house on site probably before 1517, when
John Bonde built the chapel nearby and created a deer park. (Present
chapel St. Margaret's built in 1834.) Mill on brook with pool below
Hall. Washwood Heath ref. 1454, Alom Rock 1718. Saltley belonged
to Ardens, Clodeshales, Adderleys - who built the last Hall in C17th.
Mill on Rea, open fields north of demesne. High Field still open
until 1817. Stechford Mill on Cole, L.B. Slade Field survives as
Ward End Park.
