BOUNDARIES OF HANDSWORTH

The manor and parish of Norman times were not co-extensive, for the latter included Perry Barr, Oscott, and Queslett. The manor covered 3667 acres or 5¾ square miles, making it an average one for the area. Its boundaries were largely defined by watercourses, as is usual hereabouts. The Tame and Hockley Brooks formed the north and south bounds : on the west the boundary ran from the Tame just east of Forge Mill along Park Lane, with a small brook completing the line at north and south ends. This part of the boundary now marks the limit of the city of Birmingham. The east bound from Hockley Brook went via Soho Hill, Hunters Road, Barker Street, Villa Cross, Lozells Road, Carlyle Road, and along a brook which flowed first between Fentham and Mansfield Roads then just north of and parallel to Witton Road into the Tame beside Witton Bridge.
