During the period of 1750 to 1900 there were very great changes
to the countryside and to people's lifestyles.
Ships The early ships were large/small with several sails. Later
they got larger/smaller and had more/less sails. By 1890 the st..........
engine had been invented and so new ships did/did not need sails.
They also went much faster/slower.
Wagons were used to transport goods in 1750 and the had to use
good/bad roads. By the 1830s most goods were carried on the r..........................
or in boats on the c........................ The boats were slow
but delicate goods (like crockery) was likely/was unlikely to get
broken. By 1890 the r................... had grown even more important
and the c............................ had started to decline as
they were so slow.
Windmills were used in 1750 but by 1830 the corn was made into
flour by machines running on ..................... and so the old
windmills were all built/pulled down.
Bridges had been built for many years. They were usually large/small
as there was not very much wheeled traffic, and most were built
of wood/stone. By 1830 there were many more carriages and the roads
were better/worse - so bridges were improved/knocked down. By 1890
there was much more traffic. Trolley buses and trams were now carrying
goods/people and so the bridges had to be much weaker/stronger
Roads were very bad in 1750 and in winter it was good/impossible
to travel far. By 1830 they had been made better/worse and people
could travel faster/slower. By the 1890s there were tarmac surfaces
and town roads were very good.
Churches got larger as people moved into the area or towns got
larger/smaller.
Houses were mostly large/small in 1750 and there were lots/not
many of them. By 1830 the towns had grown/got smaller and there
were more/less houses. Also there were big factories/shops with
giant chimneys.
River boats were tiny fishing boats in 1750 but by 1830 larger
boats carrying goods/people were using the rivers and canals. There
were also some pleasure boats.
Fields were very large/small and did/did not have hedges in 1750.
By 1850 the big/small fields had been cut into small fields by hedges;
and they are the same today, except that the towns cover more/less
than they did in 1850.
Railways did/did not exist in 1750 but by 1830 there were many/a
few. By the 1890s the railways were very/not important and there
were many more/less.
