EARLY C19th

The 1817 Enclosures in Saltley affected 110 acres of open fields, three common meadows, and the Heath. On the O.S. One-Inch Map First Edition, published in 1834 and probably corrected from the original survey of 1814-17, are found a few changes consequent to enclosure: Highfield and Sladefield Roads have been made across the fields, and Common Lane strikes north to the Tame. Aston Church and Arley Roads are shown, but there is no bridge at the Rea crossing on the former. The clusters of buildings on High Street, at Washwood where Malthouse Lane is defined, and about the quadrilateral of lanes between Shaw Hill and Over Saltley, stand out clearly, as do the linear settlements at Ward End, Alum Rock, and Treeford.
