In 1891 both the Urban District of Saltley and the Hamlet of Little Bromwich joined the enlarged City of Birmingham (Map 1). They had long been neighbours in the ecclesiastical and civil parish of Aston, and it is reasonable to look at their similarities and contrasts together, considering either or both as is appropriate.
