Scientific Report on the body found at Grauballe on April 26 1952

Date of Burial The peat had formed over 1,900 years ago
Age He was at least 30 years old
State of the Body The man was lying face down in the bog. There were no clothes or belongings with the body. His hands were smooth, so he may have been an important person. His teeth were in poor condition and he must have had terrible toothache. He was obviously a meat eater. He had arthritis in his back.
Injuries There was a long cut around the front of the neck almost from ear to ear. This had been done with a sharp blade and could not have been suicide. His left leg was broken and the skull fractured, probably after his death. The look of pain and terror on his face suggests he did not die peacefully.
Stomach Contents His last meal had been eaten just before his death. It was a soup of 63 different kinds of seed, including clover, goosefoot and buttercup. All of these are winter/early spring seeds. There was also a lot of fungus which would have made him have fits.
