Raising attainment at Key Stage 2 is about finding ways to move smoothly from Levels 3 to 4. However, there are certain mathematical areas which pupils find hardest to learn well - or teachers find hard to teach well. The BGfL Maths Booster is about creating opportunities to bridge the gap in these areas from Level 3 to Level 4.
Where are these gaps?
Birmingham's Athena EAZ have analysed 17,000 separate pieces of pupil data from their six schools in order to identify these areas of weakness. Birmingham Grid for Learning has been bridge-building - initially by creating new resources for pupils, more recently by collecting the web links below to teaching resources - and this year by creating our own teaching resources.
Does Maths Boooster work?
Targeted pupils have shown a real improvement of 20% over non-targeted pupils and the BGfL Maths Booster has played a key role in this improvement.

Number Grid ITP
This ITP generates a 100 square. You can click on individual cells to hide or highlight them and also hide or highlight rows and columns. The prime numbers and multiples can also be highlighted. (NNS)
Squaremaker
This flexible activity allows teacher (or pupils) to decide upon starting number and increment in order to generate sequences in a 2-d grid.(Ambleside Primary School)
Whiteboard Sequences
This activity offers a Word document (instructions) and Excel spreadsheet (sequences whiteboard activity), in which starting number and increments are chosen and pupils guess the word behind the counter on a 100 grid.(National Whiteboard Network)

Fractions ITP
This ITP allows you to divide a green strip into a number of equal parts and colour some in yellow. You can describe the yellow parts as a fraction, decimal (to 3 decimal places), percentage or as a ratio of yellow to green. (NNS)
4 Equivalent Fractions Activities
These four activities offer four different approaches to equivalent fractions, including a game, fraction bars, pie charts and bar charts. (Mark Weddell)

BBC ReviseWise Patterns
This BBC ReviseWise link offers a fact sheet, an activity and an excellent revision test, covering sequences derived from squares, primes, triangular numbers and rules of divisibility. (BBC)
Matchstick Staircase
This activity requires pupils to solve a problem and express the solution as a generalised statement in words and symbols, with `Flash movie demonstrating the solution.
Number Sequences
Choose Unit 12 teaching unit for the full Lesson Plans or just for the well-designed Resources download, to solve puzzles, describe patterns, extend sequences, explain and generalise.

Ruler ITP
This ITP provides a variety of lines and shapes that can be measured with the on-screen ruler. You can choose the ruler and the shapes or lines – or you can draw your own. (NNS)
Measuring Scales ITP (MASS)
This ITP allows you to add different masses to or from a scale pan. You can add masses of 1, 2, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 units. The pointer shows the total mass. You can change both the maximum value of the circular and the interval size. (NNS)
Measuring Cylinder ITP (VOLUME / CAPACITY)
This ITP allows you to control two taps that pour a liquid in and out of a measuring cylinder. You can set the scale on the cylinder to a maximum of 50, 100, 200, 500 or 1000 units and the scale interval to 1, 2, 5 or 10 units.(NNS)
