Anthony Frederick Augustus Sandys (1832-1904)

Frederick Sandys was introduced to the Pre-Raphaelites when, at the age of 25 he drew a caricature of a John Everett Millais picture showing Millais as the knight with Rossetti and Holman Hunt as two children. The picture so impressed and amused Rossetti that he introduced the younger man into his circle and they became close friends for many years.

Sandys painted oils in the Pre-Raphaelite style, his work being characterized by quality of draughtsmanship and a liking for 'femme fatales', often painted with a sneer.

With an unsurpassed control of line, Sandys, along with Millais, is deemed the most successful of the group in woodcut illustration.
