Robert Braithwaite Martineau (1826-1869)

Robert Braithwaite Martineau spent four years as a solicitor's clerk before his artist mother, Elizabeth Batty, persuaded him to take up painting. He enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools and in 1851 shared a studio in Chelsea with William Holman Hunt. It was under Hunt's influence that he became involved in Pre-Raphaelite painting techniques.

Martineau was a member of the Hogarth Club, which, during its short existence from 1858-62, had many Pre-Raphaelites as members.
