| What is Bhangra? |
|
Bhangra is the most popular and best-known dance of the Punjab, in North West
India. Though originally a male dance form, it can be performed by men or women
to the accompaniment of the dholak (drum). Being a harvest dance it illustrates
various exercises that are done in preparation for the harvest, which could
include ploughing, sowing seeds, cutting crops, harvesting and the final
celebration.
The dancers dress in brightly coloured waist cloths (like sarongs),
waistcoats studded with sparkling buttons and decorative turbans, their dance
movements are highly energetic with a view to impressing the audience with their
strength and agility.
