What is South Asian Dance?

*South Asia refers to Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

There are 7 classical dance forms, which originate from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. These are Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kathakali, Manipuri, Mohiniattam, Kuchipudi and Kathak. There are also a number of folk dances, varying in form and style from place to place. While Indian classical dance needs strict discipline and the total dedication of the dancer, folk dances are still the most natural, spontaneous and creative expression of people s emotions and imaginations. South Asian dance has an important role in the community. For example it is used in weddings, theatres, schools, religious events, temples etc. It can be a form of entertainment, but it can also reflect cultural values. Anyone can enjoy the dances of South Asia and at the same time gain an insight into South Asian Culture.
