What is the purpose of choreographic devices in dance composition?

Movement is structured in compositional forms to create dance. These compositional forms are often generated with the use of choreographic devices, such as canon, unison, the use of motif or call and response.

Choreographic devices are used to give form to ideas, from which dance movements may be developed. They provide a structure for the dance and create a more interesting dance composition for the audience.
