Description:
This is a 'big book' about Bangladesh with a series of word, text and sentence level activities.
Resource Support Notes:
The book can be used to support both the National Literacy Strategy and the Geography Programmes of Study (Contrasting Locality).

Shared/Group Reading
The text has been made as big as possible to allow the book to be used as a shared reading activity with the children sitting on the carpet in front of a computer monitor (the bigger the monitor the better).

The photographs that are used to illustrate the book may appear to be quite small, however, if you click on the image a full-sized version will appear. Clicking on the large image will return you to the page. This should enable the children to observe detail in the photographs and lead to interesting discussion.

Navigation of the Book
You can move forwards or backwards from page to page clicking on the bottom right or left corner of the page. Some of the less common words are linked to a glossary where the children can read further information about that word. Clicking on the word in the glossary takes you back to originating page. The text on the index page at the end of the book is linked to all the relevant pages of the book.

Activities
All the activities are interactive in that they are completed by clicking the mouse to solve the questions whilst 'online'. Electronic feedback on progress is instant. The literacy activities at the end of the book are as follows:

Indexing - A selection of words are presented which need to be placed in alphabetical order into an index. The activity has several levels of difficulty allowing for differentiation.

Capitalisation - A selection of pages are presented in lower case lettering. The object is to identify which words should be capitalised and then by clicking on the letters re-punctuate the text.

Question Marks - A selection of pages are presented with full stops instead of question marks. The object is to identify which sentences are questions and then by clicking on the full stops re-punctuate the text.

Captions - A variety of images taken from the book are presented with alternative captions from which to choose the most appropriate.

Pupil Notes

There are several activities linked to this book. Read the book and think about some of the questions that are asked. Discuss the answers to the questions with other children you may be working with. To find some of the answers you may need to make the pictures bigger. You can do this by clicking on a picture. Return to the book by clicking on the picture again.

If there are any words that you do not understand they may be explained in the Glossary. You can get to the Glossary by clicking on the word. When you want to return to the book click on the word in the Glossary.

When you have finished reading the book there are some activities that you may like to try.

Most books have indexes that tell you where you can find things in the book. The index is usually in alphabetical order. The activity asks you to arrange some index items in alphabetical order. When the hand points at an index item choose where you think it will be in the index list. When you have completed the activity you could choose a slightly harder one or try a different activity.

The capitalisation activity asks you to look at two pages of the book and find out where there are missing capital letters. When you have found one click the mouse and see what happens. You have to find all the missing capital letters before you go to the next page.

The question mark activity asks you to go through the book and find all the missing question marks. When you have found one click the mouse and see what happens. You will not be able to leave a page until you have found all the missing question marks.

The caption activity asks you to choose which caption best describes the photograph. Click on the answer that you think is the correct one.
