Description:
This activity looks at simple circuits. It can be used in a variety of ways but should always be accompanied by some practical activity using the battery, light bulb and wire.
Resource Support Notes:
This activity can be used in a variety of ways but should always be accompanied by some practical activity using the battery, light bulb and wire.

The activity can be used to illustrate the concept or reinforce it.

The first page illustrates the completion of a circuit and the lighting of the bulb. In the practical activity you could strip the insulating cover of the wire so that the children realise that it is the 'metal' wire that completes the circuit.

On the second page the pupil can see inside the light bulb and look at where the 'prongs' are attached to. If you look at the top of the screw thread of a real light bulb you will see a small blob of silver somewhere on the circumference. This is where the 'prong' is attached.

The third page illustrates the movement of electricity in a typical circuit. Note that the electrical current flows from the negative to the positive terminal of the battery.

Six questions on circuits make up the remaining part of the book. Each question asks the pupil to type in a prediction on whether the light bulb will light or not. This prediction is transferred to a final page where all the answers can be printed.

Pupil Notes

This activity helps you understand what a circuit is. After completing the animations there are six circuit questions that you can try to answer. When you have completed your answers, you can print off the page to show to your teacher.
