‘Real – life MFL resources’ in Birmingham From the 28th January until 10th February twenty students from the Maison Familiale Rurale St Sauveur Lendelin in Normandy (studying for qualifications in Service aux Personnes) were in Birmingham on work placements as Teaching Assistants and real-life MFL resources at Calthorpe, Pines and Beaufort Special Schools and Montgomery and Starbank Primary Schools. This was a fantastic support to all these schools in their language delivery. These students were then able to help deliver a Language immersion afternoon at Calthorpe School on Tuesday 8 February. They were joined by staff and pupils from Arden and Montgomery Primary Schools and Calthorpe, Brays, Pines and Beaufort Special schools to take part in language activities in French, Spanish and Mandarin led by Phil Hubert, Greg Grandon and Lily Ye. Sixth Form students and their MFL teacher Shirley Stout from Solihull School were also there to help deliver the activities. Pupils mixed well and showed every willingness to take part in showing off the language they already knew and in trying new ones. All enjoyed the experience, not least because of the opportunity to meet and work with a really inclusive range of partners. Brays School is promising to hold the next such session in the summer term. Everyone is looking forward to it! Images showing pupils engaged in activities on 8th February at Calthorpe Special School As part of the support that the Local Authority can offer, we currently hold termly meetings for all Special School language teachers or those interested in developing languages in their school to attend. The next meeting will be held later this term. Details to follow shortly. Please come along ... we would love to see you... If you would like to attend this meeting or be put on the mailing list about future meetings please email Jackie Buturo on: Jackie.buturo@birmingham.gov.uk See the link section for an example of the overview of a scheme of work for units 1 -12 and the first 9 units created by Phil Hubert (Calthorpe Special School).
