Information:
In the academic year 1999/2000, Birmingham secured funding from the excellence in cities initiative to develop a range of initiatives including the establishment of a network of Learning Support Centres designed to provide support to pupils with behaviour difficulties who were felt too be at risk of exclusion.

At the outset eleven secondary schools were identified for full funding.
Methodology:
The initial bid for excellence in cities money detailed specific criteria against which the success of Learning Support Centres would be evaluated. These were as follows:
  • Reduced rates of fixed term and permanent exclusions
  • Improved attendance
  • Improved academic attainment
  • Reduced incidence of disruptive and anti social behaviour
  • Improved social ethos within the school
  • Reduced teacher stress
  • Increased pupils and parent satisfaction with the school
  • Reduced pupil mobility/attendance at schools outside the local area
