National Curriculum Review - Call for Evidence

Launch Date: Thursday 20 January 2011

Closing Date: Thursday 14 April 2011

Have your say re: Birmingham Primary Curriculum Guarantee

The government is currently reviewing the primary curriculum. The LA encourages primary schools and leadership teams not to wait for national direction on a new primary curriculum but to continue to develop the curriculum in ways that will tailor learning to the needs of children.

We want to spell out a shared set of values and principles for the city, by which primary education in Birmingham is guided.

Many different groups have contributed their thoughts on what these shared principles should be and we have collated these sources to provide a starting point for wider consultation.  Please let us know your opinions via this blog: http://bhampcguarantee.blogspot.com/

The new government's perspective on the National Curriculum is summarised here:

Some quotes from the page:

"Ministers are committed to giving schools more freedom from unnecessary prescription and bureaucracy. They have always made clear their intentions to make changes to the National Curriculum that will ensure a relentless focus on the basics and give teachers more flexibility than the proposed new primary curriculum offered."

"Primary schools teaching Key Stages 1 and 2 will still receive an extra non-contact day in 2010/11 to help them prepare adequately for the next school year and consider new approaches."

"Schools that purchased additional curriculum handbooks and guidance or copies of the proposed new level descriptors will be automatically reimbursed by the Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency (QCDA)."

New-look National Curriculum website already likely to change or go!

The National Curriculum website is likely to change quite soon, however, there are a number of useful resources on it that you might wish to look at or even save.

We don't know when any such changes may take place so please save anything you want asap!

We have been given access to electronic copies of the QCDA Curriculum Toolkit.

These have all been uploaded to:

http://curriculumco-developmenttoolkit.blogspot.com/  - which shows a little of each document

and at

http://www.slideshare.net/juko101 from which they can be all downloaded.

Leadership for personalising learning

"It is impossible to over-state the importance of leadership in making personalised learning work.  Leadership that is focused on learning has the greatest impact on performance and achievement."

If you want to review your curriculum

Click here for the new Birmingham curriculum self-review document

Schools should adapt this document to meet their own needs - it is one way of supporting self-evaluation of the curriculum.

As a school would you like to offer other audits/reviews you have used and found helpful? If so please send them to julia.kossowska@birmingham.gov.uk and we will add the best ones here.

If you want to be part of a network

For schools who are embarking on the curriculum journey, there are termly Network meetings.

These offer an update on the national picture and opportunities for schools to discuss and collaborate with each other.

The next meetings will be in February and May 2011.
