What is a Case Study?

A case study is an in depth study of some aspect of what is happening in your classroom or school. A case study will usually start from a question:

Can the interactive whiteboard be used to support writing?

  • Are there learning gains if we teach mathematics creatively?
  • Why does this activity work while the others didn t?

It is not just a simple description because all situations that happen in teaching and learning are complex.  A case study will therefore inevitably be a complex picture based upon the great variety of observations that you may have made to try to picture it.

Building Your Case Study.

A case study will usually have several elements and the BGfL Case Study Templates attempt to reflect this by providing sections and sub-sections which you can use to build the case study. Each section contains a HELP element which gives a rationale for that section and suggestions of the way in which the content can be structured.
