| Could you give me a description of what will happen at my Grade 3 trumpet exam and the names of some pieces of music that are Grade 3 standard please? |
| Hello! The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) runs exams for all types of instruments all over the country. There will be a local centre for you, which may be a church, community centre, school or other similar building. When you arrive, there will be lots of other people taking exams before or after you. There will probably be a waiting room, and a practice room in which you can prepare yourself and warm up your instrument before you go in. When it is your time, you will be taken to the examination room. The examiner might be a man or a woman, and will probably be friendly but official! They sit behind a desk and take notes on your playing. You will have to play three different pieces, some scales and arpeggios and some sight-reading. You will also have to respond to some aural tests, where the examiner plays various things and you have to listen and answer questions about the pulse, dynamics and so on. You will practise all of these skills with your teacher beforehand! On the ABRSM website you will find a full list of Grade 3 standard pieces. It includes the Military March by Schubert, Troika by Prokovief and the Pink Panther by Henry Mancini! Click on the link below to find a full list. The ABRSM also offers Jazz exams for trumpet players. You can click on the second link below to find out more about this. Are you taking your Grade 3 exam soon? If so, good luck! |
