Food

Food is fundamental to everyone's health and well-being. Children need to learn about healthy eating and drinking and this is throughout the curriculum.

Schools also need to fully integrate healthy eating into the whole school day - from breakfast provision, mid-morning, schools meals, packed lunches, availability of water, growing food, practical cooking lessons.

Schools need to

  • have a food policy
  • have member of staff with food safety qualification.

For further information contact Sandra Passmore, Education Adviser.

Physical Activity

Everyone needs to be active every day in order to stay healthy.  Being active includes walking or cycling to school, playing in the garden or the park, riding your bike and playing in the playground and how schools use their playgrounds can have a large effect on pupils' physical activity.

For further information on how to develop your school's level of physical activity, please contact Niall Crawford, Education Adviser or go to the Publications page.

Physical activity is different from PE (Physical Education). Schools need to have a PEPA (Physical Education Physical Activity) policy. To obtain a PEPA policy go to the Publications page.

Healthy Schools

A school’s point of view on Healthy Schools: “The entire healthy school process has provided a framework to ensure that systems and processes are in place and working to make sure that all children continue to achieve, feel safe and
enjoy coming to school.
The leadership team feel that this was instrumental in the school being judged as Outstanding by Ofsted in 2009.
The Health Education Service team are key in providing support and direction to maintain momentum and achieve
such improvements.”
