How can dance tell a story without speaking or singing?

A dancer communicates through their body and their facial expression. In some dance styles like ballet or bharatanatyam there are gestures (hand movements) or mimes that have meanings. For example in ballet if you place your hand on your heart it means love and rolling your hands around each other means dance.

Emotions can be shown through the way a movement is danced for example a character who is dancing slowly with very little energy might be sad.

The costume, music, set design or film that is shown with the dance will also tell you a lot about the story and the characters in it.

Good ballet stories to look out for:

Sleeping Beauty

Beauty and the Beast

Copéllia

La Fille mal gardeé

Hobson's Choice
