Scott Charnley of Microsoft has suggested that computer systems that have been infected and form part of botnets should be blocked from accessing the internet.

Botnets, networks of computers formed by malicious software without the knowledge of their owners, are used by criminals to commit crimes such as online bank fraud. It has been estimated that up to 100000 computers in the UK alone are infected in this way.
